UPS and UPS Systems

Written by Gillie

UPS, UPS SYSTEMS

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source – typically mains power – fails. A UPS has its own rechargeable battery which provides immediate emergency power for your system when the main supply has been cut and thus preventing data loss.

In the event of a sustained power failure, the UPS is able to provide sufficient battery power for files to be saved and for the whole system to be shut down in an orderly manner.  In the case of an alternative power source being available -such as a generator – the battery will provide sufficient power to keep your system running until the secondary supply is brought online. UPS’s also filter the power supply entering your computer system, thereby limiting the detrimental effect of spikes.

Typically a UPS is used to protect computers, data centres, telecommunication equipment or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause data loss, disruption of productivity, injuries and fatalities. UPS units range in size from those designed to protect a single computer to large units powering entire data centers, buildings or even cities.
As a business you need to sustain critical operations that simply can’t afford to be down as downtime can cost a company a lot of money in wasted time.

South Africa – Construction in 2011

Written by Theresa Anne

Building and construction had a huge boost in 2011 with the hosting of The FIFA Soccer World Cup Tournament; hotels were built, stadiums, airports and roads were being built and upgraded, and the general consensus was not only positive, but South Africans were euphoric, if only temporarily.
There is a definite positive feel with the recent recovery in the world economy and interest rates are also coming down. Banks are lending again, albeit cautiously, but the National Credit Act has impacted quite substantially on the way banks are granting loans. Banks in general are granting bonds, but the days of getting 100% bonds seem to be in the distant past.
Construction and development are once more breaking ground in 2011. These mostly apply to those that have previously done all their homework. Residential property development is not as glamorous and prolific as it was in the past. It seems as if people in general are thinking on more compact and a smaller scale.
It seems as if consumerism is now being nipped in the bud.
What is of significance is that the  building and construction industry is now enabling beginners to start developing once again, which is one of the South African government’s main goals, and that is to improve services to all South African’s which in turn should impact on the construction and development industry in South Africa as a whole.

History of Civil Engineering

Written by terry

The Institution Of Civil Engineering was founded in France during the 18th Century.
The first recorded civil engineer was John Smeaton who hailed from England.
Since the year 1761 civil engineers have been largely responsible for clean running water and sanitary systems that have saved limitless lives. A small group of engineers in London, consisting of a group of young men, formed the ICE in 1818 or The Institution of Civil Engineers as we have come to know it. The institution has offices all over the world, but has its base in London, where the exchange of ideas pertaining to all civil engineering matters takes place.

Civil engineering ensures that clean water is supplied by erecting reservoirs, dams, canals; the responsibility of civil engineers is for the purification of water and there is involvement in both agribusiness and geosynthetics on a large scale.

Clean water is essential for the health and safety of whole communities, therefore the role that civil engineers play in today’s modern world is essential for the safety and health of whole communities.

There is often a lack of clean drinking water in undeveloped and rural areas. Access to clean water is the right of every individual, therefore the role that civil engineers play is essential and life-saving for millions of individuals.

South African Construction

Written by Theresa Anne

The recent credit crisis has had negative effects on construction right across the globe, but with the gradual recovery in the world economy, there is a definite upswing, especially on local territory.

A perfect example of negative effects on building and construction is the Middle East. Dubai is also making a huge come-back, with property being attractive to investors, and especially those that are based in the GCC countries, such as Kuwait and Bahrain.

Civil engineering companies provide a full range of installation and design, but if you are thinking of building an office block or home, choose a company that has a good track record, excellent history and background and one which is reputable.

South Africa has so much to be proud of; not least the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup Tournament, when so many outstanding world-class stadiums were built by our excellent local civil engineers, making us stand head and shoulders above the rest of the world  and walk tall amongst the best of the best globally. Since the 2010 FIFA World Cup the world has viewed South Africa in a totally different light, with South Africa earning huge respect. This has lead to strong foreign investment.

Civil engineers are also responsible for the excellent Gautrain that many of us find a necessity; something we did not dream of having access o in the past.

Civil Engineering

Written by Theresa Anne

The interesting thing about civil engineering is that it impacts largely on all aspects of our lives.
Civil engineers are the professionals that design and build the infrastructure of our modern-day world, such as stadiums, roads dams etc, and they ensure that essential and vital services are put in place in. Vital systems such as our electrical systems, water systems, dams, canals, bridges and buildings; these are all designed and build by our civil engineers.

Civil engineers are responsible for the design and also the maintenance of our airports railways ports and all our bridges, too.

Civil engineering is the oldest engineering after military engineering and this is broken up into various smaller disciplines; these include materials engineering, geotechnical engineering , environmental engineering and urban engineering to name a couple of the sub-disciplines that fall under the civil engineering umbrella.

Improving the living conditions of people and creating spaces for people to live in, therefore playing an integral in the upliftment of whole communities falls on the shoulders of civil engineers.

It is therefore imperative that in a democracy that a high standard of infrastructure and a high standard of design and building is available to all. We all have a right to excellent living conditions where our children will be able to work and play and grow in a society where these facilities are available to all.
Find out more about civil engineering and other kinds of engineering that are important to keep our country running smoothly.

Subcontractors

Written by admin

Like most companies that have each different department that serves certain functions thus making up the different facets of the business, the same can be concluded about subcontractors, the job of a subcontractor is one that is very much needed as subcontractors come in to fulfill a much needed aspect of the construction job.
Subcontractors are people or companies hired by general contractors to do a specific part of the construction job. Subcontractors are there to relieve all the aspects of the general construction job so hiring subcontractors is a good idea as they are equipped to take care of all those jobs that require special technical skills.
Subcontractors handle work that the general contractors may need specialists to take care of such as:
• Electrical system
• Plumbing
• Alarms
Subcontractors have good working relationships with general constructors, as it is easier for both parties to have a good working relationship.
